Sustained release microparticles and their preparation using a multi-emulsion process, are new. A method for preparing sustained release microparticles using a multi-emulsion process, comprises: (a) dissolving or dispersing a drug in each of at least 2 oils to give at least 2 primary oil phases or emulsions, each containing a biodegradable polymer; (b) dispersing the primary oil phases or emulsions in one aqueous phase, simultaneously or in succession; and (c) removing the organic solvents from the drug-dispersed solution to produce microparticles. An independent claim is included for the new microparticles.
