1. A method of implanting a device between adjacent spinous processes comprising:
creating an incision in a patient to be treated; dilating any interspinous ligaments in a position in which the device is to be placed in the patient; sizing a space between adjacent spinous processes; and inserting the device between the adjacent spinous processes in a first position, the device comprising:
an elongate body comprising a first end portion, a second end portion, and a central support portion disposed between the first end portion and the second end portion;wherein the first end portion comprises a wing member movable from the first position to a second position, the wing member including an outer surface and an inner surface that faces a central longitudinal axis of the elongate body;wherein in the first position, the wing member serves as a ramp to engage and separate the adjacent spinous processes; and moving the device to the second position to expand the wing member such that a portion of the inner surface of the wing member is capable of contacting a lateral surface of at least one of the spinous processes to limit movement of the device with respect thereto, inserting a guide wire laterally through the skin and into an interspinous space; creating a working portal concentric to the guidewire by inserting a series of sequentially larger diameter tubes to dilate the tissue surrounding the guidewire; and once a dilating tube having a sufficiently large inner diameter to accommodate the device is positioned about the guidewire, withdrawing the smaller diameter tubes, leaving the guidewire and the outer tube.
