The machine tool has a boring and milling spindle head (4) movable in the vertical direction (Z) in the machine frame, and a workpiece slide carriage movable on the horizontal axes (X). A chuck (5) on the slide carriage clamps the workpiece, and a centring clamping mechanism (6) for the latter is also provided. The clamping mechanism turns and/or pivots in the machine frame w.r.t. the spindle head and is so designed that, with the workpiece clamped in the chuck and the mechanism open, the workpiece can pass through in the X direction.
