HYBRID TYPE DISPLAY INSTRUMENT

PURPOSE: To provide a compact hybrid display instrument for vehicle instrument panels that has an analog information display and a symbolic information display combined so that they are clear and read easily. CONSTITUTION: A display area 12 is practically limited to the upper half of a front panel 28 of an instrument housing, and a symbolic information display 13 of fixed and variable symbol cells 14 and 15 is rendered by a projection technique in a row along a bottom edge 16 of the display area 12. Electrical and optical control devices for the cells 14 and 15, and the system of the cells 14 and 15 itself are positioned in the lower area of the instrument housing. Above the row of symbolic display units, there extends an arc-shaped dial 18 of at least one analog gauge 19 whose pointer driveshaft 26 is supported behind or below the bottom edge 16.
