摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a display device whose utilizing efficiency of light is high by effectively utilizing the linear polarized light of a color separation optical system. SOLUTION: This device is constituted of a color separation optical means 13 separating the light of a light source 8 to three primary colors, three polarizers 15(15a-15c) selecting the linear polarized light from the light from the optical means 13, a plane-of- polarization rotation means 14(14a and 14b) provided with a function rotating the plane of the polarization of the linear polarized light and arranged between the optical means 13 and the polarizers 15, an image forming means 18(18a-18c) on which the light selected by the polarizers 15 is made incident and which forms an optical picture as the change of double refractivity and a projection means 19(19a-19c) projecting the optical picture formed by the image forming means 18. Then, the optical means 13 is constituted of wavelength selecting mirrors 10 and 11 obliquely arranged by a prescribed angle with respect to an optical axis and a plane mirror 12. By the rotation means 14, the (s) polarized light reflected on the mirrors 10 and 11 is converted to the (p) polarized light. Then, the plane of the polarization of the linear polarized light rotated by the rotation means 14 is substantially aligned with the transmission axis of the polarized light of the polarizer 15.
