A high density storage magazine for storing a plurality of compact discs. The magazine has a plurality of shelves arranged in a vertical stack wherein the shelves are individually movable in a vertical axis. Such mobility functions to increase or decrease vertical distance between a larger disc access distance and a smaller disc non-access distance as measured between adjacent shelves, with each shelf capable of accommodating one compact disc for storage. When the magazine is not operative, all shelves are movably situated to be the smaller disc non-access distance from each other. Conversely, when a disc is to be withdrawn or replaced at any shelf of the magazine, the shelf designated for the disc and the shelf immediately thereabove are movably situated with respect to each other such that the distance between them is the larger disc access distance such that a disc loader can grasp or release a disc at the shelf site. After retrieval or replacement of a disc, the affected shelves are movably situated to again assume a close, non disc access distance from each other. As it is evident, such magazine construction permits high density disc storage vertically combined with direct, full access to any disc there stored. |
