PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent occurrence of an overrun error effectively. SOLUTION: In a printer wherein an intermediate code preparing part 10 converts print data 6 into intermediate codes for each band, stores them in a memory, expands them thereafter in a bitmap and then transfers them to a print engine to print them, a time for expansion for each band is measured by an expansion time measuring part 12b and whether or not the time for expansion from the intermediate codes into a bitmap format exceeds a threshold 16b is determined for each band by a comparative determination part 12a, whereby a band control table 18a is prepared. The band control table 18a is copied only for a band for which the threshold is exceeded, so as to prepare an expansion control table 18b. The expansion control tables 18b are sorted and converted into sorted expansion control tables 18c wherein the bands are rearranged in the sequence of lengths of the time for expansion. Beginning with the higher-order bands in the sorted expansion control table 18c, the bands are expanded in sequence preliminarily in the bitmap format as far as a space allows them in the memory.
