The fault detection method uses an ultrasonic wave (25) supplied to the inside surface (11) of the tested component (1), which is polarised in a direction transverse and perpendicular to the component longitudinal axis, with detection of the ultrasonic wave after reflection from the component outer surface (5). The ultrasonic wave is supplied to the component at an angle to its radial direction which is greater than the critical transversal refraction angle of the material, e.g. an angle of greater than 35 degrees in the case of a steel component.
