<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound semiconductor base optical waveguide element which has small propagation loss and has the desired number of modes. SOLUTION: In the optical waveguide element having a substrate 51, a first clad layer 52 and a second clad layer 54 which are successively arranged on the substrate 51, and a core layer 53 which is arranged between the first clad layer 52 and the second clad layer 54, the core layer 53 is provided with a band shape, and the first clad layer 52, the second clad layer 54 and the core layer 53 are formed of a compound semiconductor base material. The number of modes is easily controlled because the core layer 53 is embedded. A light emitting element is integrally formed with a light receiving element because of being composed of the compound semiconductor base material. Also, an electrode or the like is easily arranged on the second clad layer 54.</p> |
