PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for recognizing image, with which the acquisition area of a template image is dynamically corrected by an optical flow. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a flow estimating part 4 for estimating the optical flow of an inputted image, a template matching part 5 for detecting the correspondent area of highest correlation with the template image of the input image, a correction quantity control part 8 for controlling the correction quantity of the template acquisition area on the basis of the detected correspondent area, an area correcting part 9 for correcting the template acquisition area on the basis of the estimated optical flow, a template renewing part 10 for renewing the former template image to an image in the acquisition area of the template image provided by the correction, and a template extracting part 7 for extracting an area, where the optical flow newly occurs, in the image as a new template image and by utilizing the optical flow, the acquisition area of the template image can be dynamically corrected corresponding to the area of an object.
