Heat is stored and released as required via a heat transport medium in a multi-compartment tank (2). An apparatus (1) for storing and allocating heat comprises a tank with multiple compartments for storing and releasing heat, a conduit system for at least one heat transport medium and a control device for regulating the flow of the medium through this system. The conduit system comprises a number of the tank compartments, a number of heat supplying units and a number of units which require heat. An Independent claim is also included for a method of storing and allocating heat using this apparatus, comprising the following steps: (a) establishing the heat requirement of a number of devices connected to the apparatus; (b) establishing the heat which can be supplied by a number of the heat sources connected to the apparatus; (c) establishing the desired heat flow for a given situation between the tank compartments and the heat requiring devices and heat sources; and (d) using the control device to regulate the flow of heat transport medium via the conduit system.
