The device has a bottom die (11) with aperture (16), a relatively moveable die (1) with drive (18), and guide (2) forming a holding-down device for the sheets (6,7) and a rivet (15) feeder. The opening of the aperture and the cross section of a die end face are adjusted to each other, so that a clinch connection of the sheets can be formed without a rivet. The drive has a control unit (19), which supports two stages for the formation of a rivet connection. The first stage is arranged for the rivet connection, the second stage is arranged for a clinch connection. The two stages differ from each other in an end point of an advance movement of the die in direction of the bottom die.
