PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for synthesizing highly pureα,α,α',α'-tetrachloro-p-xylene. SOLUTION: This method for synthesizing highly pureα,α,α',α'-tetrachloro-p-xylene comprises reacting terephthaldicarboxyaldehyde with a mixture of SOCl<SB>2</SB>with dimethylformaldehyde to obtain the production mixture containing theα,α,α',α'-tetrachloro-p-xylene as a main component and the 4-dichloromethylbenzaldehyde as a by-product.
