PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an obstacle detecting device capable of surely detecting an obstacle during night driving. SOLUTION: An image processing circuit 42 calculates an average pixel value of every 192 of local areas Am formed by dividing an imaging face 11 of an image sensor 1 into a plurality of imaging faces (step S120). A threshold SHm on the local area Am is set up on the basis of the average pixel value on each local area Am (step S130), and is stored in a memory 46 (step S140). Image data stored in a first image memory 45 is read out, and is converted into binary data (step S140). Contraction processing is performed on the binary data stored in a second image memory 47 at last, and the binary data subjected to the contraction processing is stored in a third image memory 48 as bitmap data (step S180).
