PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a sea-island type conjugate fiber capable of providing an ultrafine fiber having a uniform fiber diameter. SOLUTION: The method for producing the sea-island type conjugate fiber by using an easily soluble polymer as a sea component and a hardly soluble component as an island component and extruding molten polymers conjugated in the sea-island shape from a spinning cap is regulated as follows. The ratio of the sea to the island by area is 40:60 to 10:90, and the easily soluble polymer is a polyethylene terephthalate-based polyester copolymerized with 6-12 mol% 5-sodium sulfoisophthalic acid and 3-10 wt.% polyethylene glycol having 4,000-12,000 molecular weight. The fiber diameter (R) of the conjugate fiber, the average diameter (r) of the island component, the average value (S) of the distances of the island components present on four lines drawn so as to pass the center of the conjugate fiber cross section, and so as to cross at 45°angle, and the distance (So) between the island component nearest to the outer periphery of the fiber and the outer periphery of the fiber satisfy the specific relational expressions.
