PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear anionic polymer of vinyl(meth)acrylate, especially a linear anionic polymer having about 300 or more molecular weight, and to provide a method for producing the polymer. SOLUTION: The method for producing a linear polymer comprises anionic polymerization of monomer containing vinyl(meth)acrylate in the presence of an organometallic compound. More preferably, the method for producing a linear polymer comprises anionic polymerization of monomer containing vinyl(meth)acrylate in the presence of an organic and/or inorganic lithium salt in addition to the organometallic compound.
