A network interworking system and a method thereof are provided to process 480 traffic channels by implementing an "nB + D" system, using one D channel resource for 16 traffic E1 lines, in ISDN PRI(SL1) signaling. A communication system comprises a PSTN exchange(100), a PBX(Private Branch Exchange)(200), and a network interworking part(300). The PSTN exchange(100) provides a voice information switching service through a circuit-switched method, and uses SS7 signaling. The PBX(200) controls calls received/transmitted to/from the PSTN exchange(100), provides a voice information switching service with an external subscriber, and uses ISDN PRI(SL1) signaling. The interworking part(300), installed in the PBX(200), converts signals of SS7 signaling and signals of ISDN PRI(SL1) signaling. If a fault occurs in a D channel(421) in operation, the network interworking part(300) automatically switches the D channel(421) into a backup channel(422). Two SS7 signaling channels(411,412) connect the PSTN exchange(100) with the interworking part(300). Two ISDN PRI(SL1) signaling channels(421,422) connect the PBX(200) with the interworking part(300). The D channel(421) processes 16 traffic E1 lines, or a maximum of 480 traffic channels.
