A method and an apparatus for decoding a multi-channel audio signal are provided to improve efficiency of decoding by selectively performing the decoding for residual coding data. A method for decoding a multi-channel audio signal includes the steps of: extracting extension data type information(201); and if a residual signal exists according to the extension data type information, extracting length information of the residual signal(203). The multi channel audio signal decoding method omits the decoding of the residual signal as much as the length information of the residual signal. The length information of the residual signal assigns a bit adaptively according to the length of the residual signal. The length information of the residual signal represents a header length of the residual signal. The length information of the residual signal represents a frame length of the residual signal.
