The starter for a lawn mower engine has a roller (29) supported so that it can turn freely on a push handle (19) of the lawn mower (10). A starter cable (45) is passed over the roller (29) and its free end (43) is connected with a foot lever (40) which is pivoted on the lawn mower (10) at a distance from a pivot shaft of the foot lever (40). There is a starter roller and a connected drive roller. The starter roller has a relatively large diameter and is connected with one end of a starter cable. One end of a flexible drive element is fixed to one of the drive rollers. The other end is connected with the foot lever.
