Structural elements, in particular supporting and bearing elements, can absorb high tensile and compressive forces or flexural forces with considerably reduced use of steel by using a hollow profile which has a cavity closed on all sides and a filling nozzle and an outlet valve, in order to fill the hollow profile with an alpha hemihydrate or a similar construction material which absorbs high compressive forces. In this case, two, preferably opposite, walls are to be designed as rigid and dimensioned essentially corresponding to the precalculated tensile forces, while the side walls connecting these two rigid walls are designed to be stretchable, foldable or slidable one into the other. A corresponding surface-covering hollow profile can be used preferably in underground mining as a lagging element, its special shaping making it ensure a tight connection to the rock both of the hollow profile and of the roadway support.
