The device (1) avoids a user thereof having to himself manually select a free line when he wishes to call another user. For this purpose, the device (1) comprises a line-voltage detector (11) which produces a busy signal if, when the user lifts the handset (2) with the intention of calling another user, the line to which the device (1) is connected is busy with a communication set up with another telephone set connected to the same line. The control circuit (13) for the device (1) then uses this busy signal to command the connecting of the device with another line.
