PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driving method capable of driving light emission of a matrix type display panel with low power consumption. SOLUTION: At the time of performing sub-field drive making light emitting elements carrying respective pixels emit light in accordance with pixel data over a period corresponding to a sub-field in respective sub-fields constituting the display period of one field of a video signal, the number of sub-fields is changed in accordance with the number of gradation of the luminance level to be expressed by the video signal.
