PURPOSE: To detect the field of a magnetooptical material medium extending laterally by providing means branched into adjacent sections on the opposite sides of the medium and creating a magnetic field in the medium. CONSTITUTION: Bias magnets 360, 370 are arranged to creat oppositely magnetized areas smoothly over a finite length in a waveguide 310 which is turned such that the longitudinal axis thereof crosses the magnetic center line and the position of cross point along the longitudinal axis is adjusted to shift along the magnetic center line. According to the arrangement, the waveguide 310 is exposed to the magnetic bias generated from the bias magnets 360, 370 thus creating oppositely magnetized magnetic areas 380, 390 partitioned by a barrier wall 400. A light transmitted from a source 330 through an optical fiber 340 is preferably reflected on a mirror 420 to pass twice through the waveguide 310 before being turned by 45 deg. totally by means of the bias field. |
