The traffic warning system has a mobile traffic light module (1) that is supported on a guide rail (9) that runs alongside the road. The housing of the module has small wheels (25) that engage the rail and one is driven by an electric motor. When not in use the module is parked with a secured housing that also has detector circuitry. When traffic density reaches a specific level the module is moved along the rail and the lighting system activated. Control of the unit is from a central station.
