The measurement scale (4) is mounted on a guide rail (1) either directly or via a scale carrier body (5) to which it is attached. The guide rail has recesses (8,9) to which the scale is removably coupled. The scale or carrier body is inserted into the recesses in the rail to make a shape locking connection. The recesses and the guide rail can be made in one piece. The recesses can be in the form of a groove and can extend along the entire length of the guide rail. The scale can be in the form of a flexible metal strip which is stabilised by its connection to the guide rail.
