The device comprises a clamping mechanism (4,10) which grips the complete round along its lengthwise axis (A), whilst leaving the bullet etc. (15) free. A measuring device (11) is situated to one side of the mechanism. The force exerted by a correcting mechanism (7,8) in the transverse direction aligns the axes of the bullet (15) and case (14). The clamping mechanism can have a larger-diameter section, and a smaller one to suit the narrowed portion of the case supporting the bullet. Equipment can be included to define the position of the bullet, and this and the measuring device can be to the side of this position. The clamping mechanism can be arranged to turn in a ball- or needle-roller-bearing.
