PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form an image of high quality even on a recording medium low in smoothness, to prevent the deterioration of image quality with the lapse of time and to miniaturize an apparatus. SOLUTION: An ink supply medium 13 is held between a thermal head 1 and a platen 2 in such a state that an ink removing film 16 is closely bonded on the hot-melt ink layer 15 formed on a film like base material 14 and the heating element 18 of this thermal head is selectively heated corresponding to the image signal obtained by reversing the final image from a date melt ink layer 3 to transfer the same to the ink removing film 16 to form a negative image 17. The ink removing film 16 is fed in the direction shown by an arrow by the rotation of the platen roller 12 to be recovered by a taking-up roller 7. The positive image 8 remaining on the base material 14 is superposed on the recording paper 19 fed by the rotation of a pressure roller 4 and melted by the heat of a heat roller 3 and transferred to the recording paper 19 to become a final image 20.
