PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbonization apparatus for organic matter-containing sludge which can reduce the concentration of dust in exhaust gas from a carbonizing furnace without regard to the kind of sludge to be treated to dispense with a dust collector for collecting the dust in the exhaust gas from the carbonizing furnace and to reduce equipment cost. SOLUTION: In the carbonization apparatus comprising a receiving hopper 10 as a sludge storage tank for storing sludge prepared in a form of a dehydrated cake beforehand, and a carbonizing furnace 18 made by installing a retort 22 comprising a rotary drum, a dry distillation container, in a furnace body 20, feeding the sludge fed from the receiving hopper 10 to the axial one end of the retort 22 and moving it in the axial direction to carbonize the sludge by dry distillation, and discharging the carbonized material from the axial other end of the retort 22, the receiving hopper 10 is made as a fermentation device for supplying air to the sludge stored therein and fermenting it.
