The operation involves determining repeatedly over time a characteristic value of the output quantity of an internal combustion engine (1) in order to produce a time trend of the characteristic value. The time trend is filtered as a function of the operation of the cylinder banks (5, 10) of the engine. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine operating device.
