A meter reading system comprising a data manager computer system and a plurality of physically separate meter reading devices wherein the computer system firstly associates each reading device with a consumer's address and prints a label for that address allowing each device to be sent out by a postage service to a consumer to use with their utility meter. Once the device has retrieved information for the usage of said utility the reading devices are sent back to the distributor such that information on the reading device can be uploaded to the computer system for analysis. The reading devices can be used on water meters to detect leakage information for the system. This process negates the need for a technician to be sent to the property which would reduce operating costs for the utility companies. |
