A system and method including a transmitter including digital signal processor for providing a shaped data output in response to an input data stream. The shaped data output is coupled to a modulator that modulates an optical signal in response to the shaped data output to provide a non-rectangular shaped output having channel spacing greater than Nyquist channel spacing. Providing a shaped output consistent the present disclosure mitigates the effects of non-linear impairments in an optical transmission system. |

1. A system comprising:
a digital signal processor configured to receive an input data stream and apply a transfer function to said input data stream to produce shaped data; and a modulator configured to modulate an optical signal in response to said shaped data to provide a modulated optical signal having a channel spacing greater than a symbol rate of said modulated optical signal and a step function spectral shape having a central portion disposed between a first and a second shoulder portion, wherein a power of said first and said second shoulder portion is approximately half of a peak power of said central portion, and a total power of said step function spectral shape is the same as a Nyquist signal. |
