A known dipstick for checking the oil level in motor vehicle engines comprises a steel rod flattened at the bottom end on at least one side, which is removably inserted into a filler neck of the oil sump. Oil level markings are applied on the flattened longitudinal section. For checking the oil level the dipstick must be drawn out of the filler neck, cleaned, re-inserted into the filler neck as far as the stop and finally drawn out again. The oil level can be determined from the wetting on the flattened longitudinal section. This process is time-consuming, irksome and carries the risk of getting oneself dirty. A guide tube with float is now provided. The guide tube remains constantly in the filler neck of the oil sump. The float is connected by way of a fibre glass line to a position sensor which slides in a transparent graduated cylinder on the upper end of the guide tube. The position sensor indicates the respective oil level without removing the dipstick. <IMAGE>
