PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing unit for printing on the surface of a recording medium, capable of easily and efficiently cleaning a thermal head without using a cleaning cartridge. SOLUTION: In a printing unit for printing on the surface of an optical disc 6 supported by a tray 8 by contacting a thermal head therewith and moving the thermal head, the tray 8 comprises a recess part 13 and a placing base 14 stored detachably in the recess part 13. The placing base 14 has a placing surface for placing the optical disc 6 thereon. The placing surface is provided with an elastic member 15 and a thermal head cleaning member 16 separately in different areas such that the elastic member 15 and the cleaning member 16 can be disposed selectively at a position corresponding to the moving range of the thermal head by taking out the placing base 14 from the recess part 13 and changing the orientation thereof. |
