Metal cutting machine tool with automatic work loading - uses compound tool slide fitted with grippers to execute work loading and unloading cycle

The distinguishing feature of the machine is the use of the compound tool slide (6) simultaneously to unload finished workpieces (25b) and to load new workpieces (25a). In a vertical lathe configuration the compound tool slide (6) moves on horizontal guideways (5) and has vertical guideways (9) for the top slide (8). Mounted on the top slide is an indexing turret (11) with four tools (12). Servo motors (16,18) drive the slides through leadscrews (17,20). Underneath is the vertical spindle with chuck (24). At the end of the machining cycle internal grippers (31) fastened to the top slide descend to enter the bores of a new workpiece (25a) on the input rail (27) and the finished workpiece in the spindle. The compound slide traverses sideways and places the finished workpiece on the output rail (28), at the same time loading the new workpiece into the chuck.
