PURPOSE: To provide a vessel prosthesis that is mechanically strong, flexible, and does not require preliminary coagulation before transfer by moistening a tube of porous polyester fibers with water, contacting its inside surface with a solution of a biocompatible polymer in a water-immiscible solvent to cause adsorption, and forming an elastomer coating through the removal of the solvent. CONSTITUTION: A porous tube of polyester fibers is moistened with water to cause the tube to absorb the water in an amount close to maximum weight, with extra water removed from the inside surface of the tube, and with water droplets left behind in gaps in the fibers forming the tube. A solution of an appropriate biocompatible elastomer in a water-immiscible solvent or a mixture of two or more solvents is contacted with the inside surface of the tube for a short time, and then an excess amount of the solution is removed. Further, a coating of the elastomer is formed on the inner surface of the tube by removal of the solvents from the solution adsorbed, and the adsorption and removal are repeated until a continuous, nonporous elastomer coating is formed on the inside surface of the tube. |
