A fibrous material (26) is inserted into the head space (H) above the cells in an electric storage battery (10) to attenuate the explosion of combustible gases that accumulate therein. The material (26) contains absorbed electrolyte in an amount sufficient to hinder deterioration of the material (26) but insufficient to cause pumping of the electrolyte out of the battery. The attenuation material (26) preferably includes a proportion of fine fibers effective for attenuation and a proportion of heavier fibers effective for electrolyte management.
