The storage has a layer applied to its surface that remains neutral to it and is lighter. At its phase transition temperature, the coating has a low vapour pressure and in this way prevents loss of crystallization with water from the salt hydrate. The required properties can be found, for example, in paraffin oil which retains cover right over the surface despite possible cratering during solidification. The paraffin thus forms a vapour barrier which operates in particular at phase transitions.
