The method involves work pieces (1) which are transported through a gap to the press. The sides to be coated are covered with foil sheets (3,4). The work piece is laid on the lower foil sheet (4), after which each foil sheet in the area of the gap is separated by the focal point (11,12) of a laser beam (7,8). The beam is aimed onto the sheet by a focusing device (5,6) arranged on a cutting head (13). The work piece is fed into the press and the focusing device is moved back to its starting position. The workpieces are arranged one behind the other and the foil strips are moved during the separation process further in the direction of the press.
