The module has a number of segments that form a grid pattern and are electrically controlled. Each letter of the alphabet has an odd number of columns, the letters being separated by empty columns. Each module, which contains one end of a letter, has a second empty vertical column to keep the letters apart. The vertical columns in the module may be at a distance (11) apart less than the distance (12) between adjacent modules. The second vertical column of the module can be narrower than the first, and one segment of one column can be vertically split over the whole or part of its length.
