A method and apparatus for analyzing aqueous solutions containing cationic, anionic and/or neutral surfactants, soluble soaps and the like. A single-phase, non-aqueous, reactive titration composition (1) containing bismuth nitrate dissolved in glycerol is added to the test solution (10). Bismuth nitrate and glycerol react with the surfactant(s) to form micelles, change micelle size or form insoluble bismuth soaps. The reaction products are measured by potentiometer or turbidimeter (13) and the measurement correlated to surfactant concentration.
