Improvements in tyre manufacture

A tread package for a pneumatic tyre comprises two annular tread sub-packages 106 each having an annular abutment surface lying in a plane substantially perpendicular to the axis of the sub-package. The abutment surfaces of the sub-packages can be fitted together so that the tread package is tyre shaped. The sub-packages are provided in respective housings on each side of a tyre carcass on a support, the housings are moved towards the support to fit the sub-packages to the carcass and to each other and heat is applied to cause vulcanisation of the tread package.
