PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display is to carry out a rubbing treatment to a vertical alignment film such that all of liquid crystal molecules thereon are arranged with a single and constant tilting angle to prevent a collision between the molecules, thereby increasing response time of the device. CONSTITUTION: The liquid crystal display comprises the first and second substrate. The first electrode in a prescribed width is provided on the entire face of the first substrate. The second electrode in a prescribed width is also provided on the entire face of the first substrate separately from the first electrode. On the resultant structure having the first and second electrodes is provided the first vertical alignment film(13) which is subject to a rubbing treatment in the direction of the second electrode. The first polarizing plate(17A) is arranged on the back face of the first substrate. The second vertical alignment film(16) which is subject to rubbing treatment in the direction of the second electrode is formed on the second substrate opposite to the first substrate. A liquid crystal layer(14) with a single and constant tilting angle is arranged between the first and second alignment films. The second polarizing plate(17B) is also provided on the back of the second substrate.
