PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water swell sealant which retains a water sealing performance in storage, etc., and does not come off by getting wet with water due to a rainfall in the case of the sealant for segments which prevents water leakage from a gap between segments in a shield tunnel method. SOLUTION: This water swell sealant is made up with a water swell rubber 1, and has layers 2 made of a coating film (a) having a diffusion coefficient of water of <=5×10-11 cm3.cm/cm2.s.Pa at 23 deg.C formed on one surface 1-1 and one or both of side faces 1-2, 1-3 of the rubber 1, and in addition has a layer 3 made of a coating film (b) or a porous film (c) having a diffusion coefficient of water of >5×10-11 cm3.cm/cm2.s.Pa at 23 deg.C.
