PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably and precisely rush a sheet into a resister roller. SOLUTION: This sheet carrying device comprises resist means 106 and 107 arranged on the carrying directional upstream side of an image forming means 12 to send the sheet into the image forming means at a sheet carrying timing matched to the image forming motion of the image forming means; a first sheet detecting means 120 provided on the sheet carrying directional upstream side of the resist means to detect the tip of the sheet; a second sheet detecting means 104 arranged on the sheet carrying directional upstream side of the first sheet detecting means to detect the tip of the sheet separately fed from a sheet feeding means ; and a pre-resist carrying means 105 performing a pre-resist operation of temporarily stopping the sheet separately fed from the sheet feeding means in the middle of a carrying passage on the basis of the detection result by the second sheet detecting means and then carrying it toward the resist means. The pre-resist carrying means corrects the pre-resist operation timing of the following sheet on the basis of the carrying time from the temporary stop of the former sheet to its detection by the first sheet detecting means 120.
