PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To continuously and largely change a lift amount of a valve (to make the lift amount approximate to zero), in a variable valve system of an internal combustion engine, in which a position of a rotating shaft of a rocker arm is displaced to change the lift amount of the valve. SOLUTION: In the variable valve system 1 of the internal combustion engine, the position of the rotating shaft 15 of the rocker arm 12 is displaced to change the lift amount of the valve 3. The rotating shaft 15 of the rocker arm 12 is supported to be movable around a camshaft 2 along a circumferential direction of which center is a rotating shaft center 2b of the camshaft 2 so that the rotating shaft 15 can be displaced near a position to be overlapped with an axis or the extension of a valve stem 32 seen from an axial direction of the camshaft 2. A contact portion 12c of the rocker arm 12 with the valve has the length depending on a moving range of the rotating shaft 15 of the rocker arm 12.
