The method and equipment for constructing an underground tunnel along a predetermined route involve a bar placed in the ground, along which excavating equipment is moved. The bar and equipment are engaged by a drive unit supplying at least a part of the power to move the excavating equipment. At the same time as the excavating equipment the bar is displaced. Tunnel wall parts are moved along the bar by a wall drive device which engages both the bar and the tunnel wall parts. With the method, construction pits (30,32,34,36) are installed beneath ground level (38), and the bar (62,68,74) is fitted through the pits.
