A method and an apparatus for controlling image reproduction in a portable multimedia player are provided to allow a user to experience virtual reality with vibrations of the player, as an operation mode of the player is automatically switched when a change in volume level of a reproduced moving picture is greater than a reference level. An apparatus for controlling image reproduction in a portable multimedia player comprises a display unit(106), an audio processor(108), a controller(102), a vibration processing unit(110), and a set time table(104b). The display unit displays moving pictures. The audio processor outputs audio information on the reproduced moving pictures. The controller sets the portable multimedia player in a vibration mode when a change in volume level of the audio information is equal to or greater than a reference level. The vibration processing unit vibrates the portable multimedia player according to the vibration setting of the controller. The set timetable contains information on predetermined vibrating time corresponding to the moving pictures.
