<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To expand a viewing angle by optimizing the ratio of a phase difference value of an optical phase difference compensating plate and improving the contrast of a display image when the compensating plate of a liquid crystal device is used in combination. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal device has a counter substrate 20, a TFT substrate 10 disposed opposite the counter substrate 20, a liquid crystal layer 50 provided between the counter substrate 20 and TFT substrate 10, a first optical phase difference compensating plate 201 having a phase difference compensating direction corresponding to an array direction of the counter substrate 20 and formed of an inorganic material, and a second optical phase difference compensating plate 202 having a phase difference compensating direction corresponding to an array direction of the TFT substrate 10 and formed of an inorganic material. The first optical phase difference compensating plate 201 is disposed on a light incidence side of the counter substrate 20, and the second optical phase difference compensating plate 202 is disposed on a light projection side of the TFT substrate 10, the ratio of phase differences of the first optical phase difference compensating plate 201 and second optical phase difference compensating plate 202 being 2:1 to 2:3. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
