PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide detection means for metal ions or a substance to be detected, which has a large S/N ratio and is excellent in linearity of relationship between concentration and a signal corresponding to metal ions or a substance to be detected, even in a case where the concentration of the metal ions or substance to be detected in a sample is low.SOLUTION: Performed are: metal precipitation onto an action electrode of an electrode substrate containing the action electrode and a counter electrode; and immobilization of a composite containing a substance to be detected and metal particles. After oxidation potential is applied to the action electrode to generate metal ions, reduction potential is applied to a portion having a smaller area than the area of a portion to which the oxidation potential is applied in the action electrode, metal is precipitated on the surface of a portion to which the reduction potential is applied, current, voltage or electric charge due to precipitated metal is measured, and then the metal ions or substance to be detected can be detected.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
