PURPOSE:To enable the production of the title compound which is used as an intermediate of fat and oil or perfumes, especially macrocyclic musk compound, with economical advantage in high selectivity and yield by catalytic hydrogenation of a dicarboxylic acid monoalkyl ester in the presence of a cobalt catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The catalytic hydrogenation of a compound of formula I (R is alkyl; n is 4-18 integer) is carried out in the presence of a cobalt catalyst in an amount of 0.5-30wt.%, preferably 2-15wt.% based on the compound, preferably the catalyst containing cobalt, lanthanum, and palladium, particularly preferably a cobalt catalyst containing 0.001-2atoms of lanthanum and 1X10<-5>-0.05atom of palladium to give the subject compound of formula II in high selectivity and high yield. The product can be used without purification to synthesize synthesize macrocyclic lactones as a musk perfume using a variety of known chemical reactions. |
